Summer Fridays: Do the Right Thing
The temperatures are blazing hot in Los Angeles right now, so its apt that our Summer Fridays movie pick takes place on the hottest day of summer in 1980s Brooklyn. The film is Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING, chosen by WGF Board Member Craig Bankey.
"Spike Lee’s masterpiece reminds me of my first post-collegiate summer in New York," Craig writes. "Along with SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE (released only weeks later), it ushered in an exciting era of fresh, new voices in filmmaking. In light of the current news cycle (Charleston, police brutality, prison reform, Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman), I’m very interested to revisit DO THE RIGHT THING again this summer."
Read a draft of Lee's Academy Award-nominated screenplay in our Library and check out one of our favorite scenes about the battle between love and hate.
