  • Volunteers are essential to our mission of supporting students, especially those from underrepresented communities. You don’t need to be an expert writer to contribute—what matters most is your belief in our students and your willingness to learn alongside them. We particularly welcome volunteers who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color, as many of our students are youth of color.

Volunteers can engage with our aspiring writers by serving as guest speakers during sessions and offering career advice or guidance through email or one-on-one sessions at their convenience. Young Storytellers equips young people to be the driving force of their own narratives. We’re passionate about bringing people together and creating stories to raise the voices of those who don’t often get heard. We believe that when a young person understands the power of their own story—made of their unique background, culture, race, gender, sexuality, ability, immigration status, geographic location, and economic status—it creates a more empathetic and equitable future for everyone. We raise voices, one story at a time.

  • In our programs, public school students are paired with mentors to work with them as they imagine, develop, and write their own original story. At the end of the program, professional actors audition for the students and perform their scripts at an in-school assembly, called the "Big Show." No teaching or professional writing experience necessary! Our Head Mentors (lead volunteers) guide the whole class through the process of writing a story, the students come up with the stories, and all you need to do is be their cheerleader throughout the process.

Your commitment will be an hour a week - during lunch hours - for 9 consecutive weeks. Our programs operate every fall and spring semester with various start dates and locations around the Los Angeles community.

The experiences I have had volunteering for the Foundation have enriched me personally and professionally. Contact with other writers and especially aspiring writers always refreshes my outlook and introduces me to talented, but still forming, storytellers who are in need of an inspirational boost.
