Become a Core Volunteer

If you’re an emerging writer looking to make a difference, consider becoming a Core Volunteer at the Writers Guild Foundation! Core Volunteers bolster the work that we do for the community by assisting our efforts across departments.

Along with the warm, fuzzy feelings that come from helping us promote the craft of writing for the screen, you also get the sweet perk of attending our events and programs for free.

  • In order to be considered for volunteer opportunities, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Be 21 years of age or older

    • Reside in the greater Los Angeles area

    • Able to commute to the WGAW HQ on 3rd and Fairfax and the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills

    • Generally available on weekdays between 6-10PM and some weekends for events and programs or weekdays between 11AM - 6PM for the library

    Our events are primarily held at the WGAW HQ in Los Angeles on 3rd and Fairfax or the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills with occasional events at other venues in Los Angeles County.

  • Volunteers work behind-the-scenes to bring our events and programs to life. Here’s just a sampling of what we’ll ask you to help with:

    • Checking attendees and guests into events.

    • Running microphones for Q&A sessions.

    • Cleaning and maintaining food and drink stations.

    • Liaising with attendees, panelists, and guests.

    • Monitoring seating capacities.

    • Running stand-by ticket lines.

    • Working as scorekeepers for Trivia Nights.

  • If you’re interested in volunteering at the WGF, fill out our volunteer application below. While we accept applications throughout the year, we recruit new volunteers on an as-needed basis. Applications will then be reviewed for consideration.

    If we think your application looks awesome, we’ll invite you to one of our Information Sessions. This is an opportunity to learn more about the Foundation and how volunteers fit into our overall mission, as well as give us an opportunity to get to know you in person. Attending an Information Session is required in order to advance as a potential volunteer.

    If we decide you’re a good fit as a volunteer, we’ll officially invite you to help us out at future events and programs!

  • While we do not have a minimum attendance requirement, we encourage our volunteers to support at least one weekday event each quarter and one weekend event per year.

  • Nope! You don’t have to be a WGA member to become a Core Volunteer. We encourage anyone who’s passionate about our mission and the craft and business of screenwriting to apply.

Become a Mentor

The WGF provides ample opportunities for WGA members to share their knowledge and experience with emerging writers and students in underserved communities.

Members can sign up for a variety of experiences, ranging from one-off speaking engagements and workshops to long-term group mentorship. In addition to hosting several in-house writing programs, WGF partners with like-minded organizations, schools, and universities both locally and globally.

  • WGA members can engage in a variety of experiences, including but not limited to:

    • Serving as an admissions committee member, guest speaker, or mentor with the Writers’ Access Support Staff Training Program

    • Assisting with application reviews or mentoring with the Veterans Writing Project

    • Participating in a guest lecture or mock writers’ room with the Veterans Fellowship

    • Speaking to K-12, college, or university students through the Visiting Writers Project

    • Partnering with likeminded nonprofits and community groups serving writers of all levels through the Volunteer & Mentorship Program, and much more!

  • The overall time commitment for mentors varies by opportunity. We offer everything from one-off speaking engagements and short-term mentorship to curated long-term mentorship.

  • Unfortunately, the Writers Guild Foundation is unable to facilitate one-on-one mentorship opportunities for the general public. We do, however, offer exclusive educational opportunities through our Writers’ Access Support Staff Training Program and Veterans Writing Project & Fellowship.

School & University Partnerships

In alignment with our mission to expand educational access for writers everywhere, The Writers Guild Foundation offers several outlets for students of all levels to gain direct insight into the craft, careers, and day-to-day realities of working writers in Hollywood.

From organizing speaking engagements to offering valuable resources like Library tours and paid event discounts, the WGF is proud to offer academic institutions unique opportunities for students and educators to bolster their knowledge of the craft and history of writing for the screen.

Visiting Writers Program

The Visiting Writers Program connects film and television writers with speaking opportunities at schools and universities across the nation. The program aims to provide students with direct insights into the craft, careers, and day-to-day realities of working writers in Hollywood.

Library Tours & Field Trips

Visiting the Los Angeles area? The WGF offers small group tours of the Shavelson-Webb Library and Archive for academic institutions. Students can access our collection of over 45,000 scripts and related materials and learn more about the craft and history of storytelling on the screen.

Event Recordings & Discounts

Students and educators can learn from the best screenwriters in the world through the WGF’s vast library of event recordings available on our YouTube channel. In addition to offering a variety of free events, the WGF offers individual student discounts and group rates on select paid events.

Community Partnerships

The Writers Guild Foundation partners with organizations and groups that share our vision of fostering equitable access to both the craft and the business of screenwriting.

In addition to offering access to hosting collaborative events, private tours of the Shavelson-Webb Library, and cross-promotion in our weekly newsletter, the Foundation also connects WGA members with volunteer opportunities and speaking engagements through our community partners.
