Hitting the Right Notes: Writing for Movie Musicals

The big screen loves a good musical. From the classics by Rodgers and Hammerstein to modern originals that have made a splash on Broadway, the movie musical continues to give us surprising ways to tell a story over song.

For this session, we talk to screenwriters and playwrights about their process for crafting film musicals, how they’ve adapted stage books into screenplays, and their storytelling techniques within the genre.

Panelists:

  • Kay Cannon - Screenwriter (Cinderella, Pitch Perfect series)

  • Jennifer Lee - Screenwriter (Frozen, Frozen II) and Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios

  • Steven Levenson - Screenwriter (tick, tick…Boom!, Dear Evan Hansen, Fosse/Verdon) and Playwright (Dear Evan Hansen, If I Forget)

  • David E. Talbert - Screenwriter (Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey) and Playwright (The Fabric of a Man, What My Husband Doesn’t Know)

Moderated by WGF librarian Lauren O’Connor.

Panel starts at 4:00pm Pacific time.

Space is limited so RSVP now. After signing up, you’ll receive information on how to access the Zoom panel.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to us at events@wgfoundation.org.

For anyone who was unable to RSVP for the panel, we will record and post it at a later date.
