The Series of Tubes: Serial Storytelling in an Expanding World

We are sold out!

We will have a standby line at the event!

Check the website later in the day (around 6pm) – we may release 1 or 2 more tickets.

In the old days, we called TV “the boob tube” – you’d plop down in front of it and watch whatever happened to be on. This, presumably, made you something of a boob.

Today (with all respect and apologies to the late Senator Ted Stevens) it’s more like a series of tubes: What used to be a handful of channels and a shared American experience has grown and splintered and segmented into a forest of niches. Cable. Netflix. Hulu. The internet. The landscape ain’t what it used to be.

But throughout it all, the need for good storytelling hasn’t changed. Whether it’s a network stalwart, a cable sleeper hit or an indie webseries with a thousand true fans, you still need the essentials: Great characters. Smart drama. Hearty laughs. Gripping suspense. A winning concept.

On July 12, we’ll gather for our summer Television Craft Symposium at the Writers Guild Theater with a collection of time-tested dramatists, gut-busting comics, innovative creators and insightful executives. We’ll talk about crafting stories worth telling, pilots worth selling and specs that, um, are compelling. As in, a compelling read for the showrunner who’s staffing the room. That kind of compelling. OK, fine, so we’re not the Rhymers Guild Foundation.
